Career Firefighter
The Humboldt Fire District covers approximately 40 square miles
surrounding the city of Eureka on the northern coast of California.
Two engine companies operating from two stations serve a population
of 24,000 and respond to approximately 1700 calls per year. Occupancies
within the District include residential, commercial, industrial
and timberland. In addition, the district is an active participate
in the California mutual aid system. HFD has 19 career suppression
personnel, working a three-platoon system on a 48/96 schedule
and 8 volunteers.
Humboldt County has mild and often wet weather, which supports
lush vegetation including famous Redwood forests. The region offers
a great variety of outdoor recreational activities including water
sports, hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. College of the Redwoods
and Humboldt State University are both within ten miles of HFD.
Housing prices are consistent with the statewide average.
By February 2, 2012 Candidate MUST:

Be 20 years of age or older
-
Possess a high school diploma, or GED
-
Possess a Class "C" California Driver's
License and obtain a Class "B" license within six
months of appointment
-
Possess a current American Heart Assoc. Health
Care Provider CPR card or equivalent
Certify non-use of tobacco products and/or illegal controlled
substance
-
Must posses a CPAT card issued no earlier than
February 2nd, 2011

Must posses a current EMT 1 card and be eligible for certification
as an EMT 1, ETAD by Northcoast EMS within three months of appointment
Possess Firefighter 1 certification from CFSTS
Must have at least 2 years of verifiable continuous experience
as a volunteer or paid firefighter. Three or more seasons of work
experience as a wildland firefighter is also acceptable.

The Ideal Candidate
Will, in addition to the above:

Possess a current California EMT-Paramedic license
and obtain North Coast EMS Paramedic accreditation within 3
months of appointment or be a current NREMT-Paramedic with the
ability to obtain a California EMT-Paramedic license and North
Coast EMS Paramedic accreditation within three months of appointment

Have a strong desire for a fire service career
at Humboldt Fire District.

Have had life experiences and an outlook resulting
in honesty and a strong work ethic.

Possess the capability to interact with people
in a wide range of professional settings.

Possess an understanding of the technical skills
supported by a strong interest in teaching others.

Have an attitude and appearance resulting in the
ability to promote a positive image for the fire service.

Have demonstrated the physical and mental preparation
to successfully manage the physical and emotional stresses of
emergency service employment.

Possess the written and verbal skills to effectively
present these abilities.

Possess a balanced combination of formal education
of both a general nature and specific fire service curriculum.

Possess both a high level of physical fitness
and the personal and professional desire to maintain it.
The Selection Process
-
Applications will submit a completed application,
a resume, verification of all minimum requirements and a letter
of interest detailing how the candidate meets the ideal candidate
profile. These documents will be evaluated; producing a score
weighted as 40% of the candidates overall score.

Qualified candidates will be invited by mail to
take a preliminary examination on February 18th, 2012. The minimum
passing score of the examination is 80%. Performance on the
examination will be weighted as 60% of the candidates overall
score.

A ranked list will be established, based on the
above grading process. An as-yet-to-be determined number of
candidates will be invited by mail to an oral interview scheduled
for February 25th, 2012. Paramedic candidates will also undergo
an ALS skills assessment on February 25th, 2012.

A final employment list will be established by
combining the score of the oral interview, weighted 40% with
the combined scores above, weighted 60%.

Prior to appointment, candidates who have been
placed on the employment list will be invited to an interview
with the Fire Chief. Successful candidates will also be required
to pass a comprehensive physical exam, a drug screening test,
and a background investigation.

Salary range: $3,744-$4,123 per month
