Career Firefighter

HFD currently has a valid 2 year list for career firefighters and is not accepting applications for this position.


A Firefighter employed by HFD #1 is a member of an engine company which responds to a variety of local and regional incidents including, but not limited to: structure fires, medical emergencies, wildland fires, and public assistance calls. Under the supervision of a Fire Captain, a HFD Firefighter participates in regular training and drills, operation and maintenance of firefighting and rescue equipment, building inspection, public education, training of volunteer personnel, fire station and grounds maintenance, and other duties as assigned. As a member of a small organization, a HFD Firefighter is also assigned at least one area of special responsibility by the Fire Chief.

By December 9, 2006 Candidate MUST:

  • Be 21 years of age or older

  • Possess a high school diploma, or equivalent

  • Possess a Class "C" California Driver's License and obtain a Class "B" license within six months of appointment

  • Possess a current American Heart Assoc. Health Care Provider CPR card or equivilent

  • Certify non-use of tobacco products and/or illegal controlled substances
By January 1, 2007 a candidate must:
  • Have submitted all material to qualify for a Firefighter I Certificate by the CFSTS or have completed at least two continuous years of verifiable volunteer experience, equivalent to HFD Volunteer Step #4

  • Be currently certified as an EMT 1, and eligible for certification as an EMT 1ETAD by Northcoast EMS within three months of appointment

The Ideal Candidate

Will, in addition to the above:

  • Possess a balanced combination of formal education of both a general nature and specific fire service curriculum.

  • Possess both a high level of physical fitness and the personal and professional desire to maintain it.

  • Have a strong desire for a fire service career at Humboldt Fire District.

  • Have recent successful fire/EMS experience, paid or volunteer.

  • Have had life experiences and an outlook resulting in a thoughtful, honest approach and a strong work ethic.

  • Possess the capability to interact with people in a wide range of professional settings.

  • Possess an understanding of the technical skills supported by a strong interest in teaching others.

  • Have an attitude and appearance resulting in the ability to promote a positive image for the fire service.

  • Have demonstrated the physical and mental preparation to successfully manage the physical and emotional stresses of emergency service employment.

  • Possess the written and verbal skills to effectively present these abilities.

The Selection Process

  • Application Packet (Including the application form, resume of qualifications, and letter of interest to the Fire Chief) will be reviewed and graded to determine the most qualified applicants.

  • The most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in a written test. The scores from the application packet and the written test will be combined, and the top scoring applicants will progress to the next stage.

  • Applicants will then participate in a Physical Abilities Test (PAT) simulating a series of extremely strenuous firefighting activities. This is a pass/fail event.

  • A ranked list according to the scores above will be made, and candidates invited back for an oral interview. A final employment list will be made by combining the score from the application packet/written test and the oral interview.

  • Prior to Appointment, successful candidates will be required to pass a comprehensive physical exam, a drug screening, and a background investigation.

  • The employment list will last for a duration of two years.

Current Benefits for Entry Level Firefighters

  • Salary range: $3,306-$3,646 per month (effective January 1, 2008)

  • Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) 2%@50 Retirement

  • Medical Insurance partially paid by employer

  • EMT incentive pay ($60 per month)

  • Holiday pay, sick leave, vacation

  • Clothing allowance ($480 per year, paid quarterly)
